LOOKING FOR A PUPPY?

Please go to this link  before writing, it may answer some of your questions.

Chinese Crested basics   then return here for more information.....

LOOK at these photos closely... they
tell a LOT about the variable expressivity
inheritance  mode of the Chinese Crested.

This is an excellent
photo  showing varied body
hair distribution on young
Hairless Chinese Crested Puppies.

At right is a TRUE hairless-
NO BODY HAIR and almost no hair
on tail, feet and sparse on head..

At left is a MODERATE Hairless.

ALL- except the pup on the RIGHT will need at least SOME shaving/grooming when older.

These are STILL considered genetically HAIRLESS, the single coated hair has no undercoat
and they often have the primitive 'hairless' mouth.

The Powderpuff variety is DOUBLE Coated--- with an 'undercoat' .

Click here to see  the same litter at 12 weeks

"Kitty" * follow this link to see her at 6 months- this is the puppy I kept to show from the litter in the photo above- she is puppy #1-- she has less hair now as an adult---
and FAR more spots as well-  pink puppies often turn quite dark with age.

HAVOC- this page shows one puppy- and how he changed, in just an 8 week period.

THIS is Sic'm,  a HAIRY HAIRLESS-
Left- Ungroomed, single coated body hair covers most of the top of her body- her belly, lower sides are totally bare. This is about 3 mos growth.
Right- this is the SAME dog- Groomed- This dog is still Genetically  Hairless.

NOTE- MOST True hairless have very little/ to NO furnishings- feet are often bare, tail coat sparse to occasionally no hair on tail,  and Crest may be little more than a sparse mohawk. There are  dogs shown by breeders are True hairless- almost all dogs seen at shows and on TV  have body hair, but they have been groomed, even though our GOAL is a body nude dog with adequate furnishings.

Seeing the degrees of body hair will help you with correspondence with breeders. Some breeders are sending 'hairless dogs' to buyers- who are shocked when their puppy gets peach fuzz in a few days. KNOW what you are buying before it arrives. Not all Chinese Cresteds are alike, and certainly NOT what most people expect with  a first impression.  DO expect to need to groom the dog- a little- or a little more--- it generally comes with the territory.

WHY are these dogs hairy on the body when  they're supposed to be 'hairless'?

In a word- Genetics!  It is comparatively EASY to breed a totally hairless dog... it is HARD to breed a dog with a hairless body, yet still with hair on its head, feet and tail.  Its just THAT simple.

ADD to that- a responsible breeders desire to combine all the good physical qualities- add a great outgoing personality  AND to weed out unhealthy or undesirable characteristics.  When you get down to the nitty-gritty,   placement of body hair is often a lesser consideration- when good vision and/or hearing might be a more important goal.

A NOTE ABOUT BARGIN HUNTING...

As with any breed- prices for Chinese Cresteds are wildly varied. Price is dependant on :

Area of the country (prices are higher in areas of high population/demand, and lower in outlying areas where demand is lower)

Quality ( show dogs are usually 3 x PLUS the price of a companion puppy)

Breeders 'line' ( not all Cresteds LOOK alike!  IF you want a dog with a certain look, you may have to pay more for it from a breeder known to produce particular characteristics with greater regularity-- example--- I assume you are at this website, and taken the time to read on, because you were attracted to the 'look' of my dogs.)

IF you want a REAL bargin -hunt for  a HEALTHY dog first!  If you want a hairless- you may have to 'settle' for one of a color or sex or age, which  you weren't originally looking for, if your priority is a healthy pup, with a written guarantee, from a breeder who Health checks the parents and is willing to stand behind their dogs.  Breeders rarely have exactly what you're looking for at first whim-- these aren't cans of soup, so can't be kept on the shelf  long-term, without changing.

Pet puppies range across  the US from $150 to $1500... Plus shipping

Show puppies normally range from $800 to $3000... plus shipping.

Each breeder makes their own determination on pricing.

NOTE- MOST Responsible breeders sell all Pet Stock on a spay/neuter contract or already surgically neutered.  Show Stock is normally sold on a MUST SHOW/Finish Championship contract- and are willing to BACK that puppies quality- IN WRITING. Do not enter into a contract unless you are willing to fulfill the Intent of that contract.

Be sure to check out Rescue Organizations for adoptable, needy Chinese Cresteds looking for new homes. This is a way to find a loving pet for a moderate price.

REGISTRATION - does it have papers???

The Chinese Crested is given registration with the American Kennel Club. These are the dogs you see at shows, on TV and in MOST kennels.

CKC regsitration is either Canadian Kennel Club ( a responsible National Registry) OR

Continental Kennel Club--- this registry allows registration of ANY dog- purebred, thought to be purebred or even mixed and the applicant isn't informed.  The proof of pedigree is up to the honesty of the people applying for the registration ( GET REAL!)   Dogs may be from unregistered parents, mixed breeding or even stolen animals... there is no proof of heritage in many  cases.  This seems to be a registry for people who have 'acquired' dogs, and want to fool the public into thinking they're REGISTERED.   ( a very few of these dogs are also AKC registered- if they say that- make sure you see copies of that registration as PROOF)

NO dogs, without AKC papers, can EVER get AKC papers, unless the breeder who owns the AKC registerd mother of the litter applies for- and is granted AKC litter registrations ( the sire of the litter MUST also be AKC registered).  THAT MEANS NEVER.  So don't buy the 'current urban legend' that your CKC dogs can be registered with the AKC at a later time. They can not be shown in any AKC events, unless surgically neutered.  NO puppies produced by them can ever be AKC registered, even if you Breed to an AKC registered dog for a litter.

.  I get letters from people who have been grossly misinformed about CKC registered dogs being eligible for AKC registration- or for their puppies.  It will NEVER happen. AKC recognizes only registries with PROOF of parentage.

STILL interested in contacting me about available dogs????

IF so. Write me in your  FIRST letter,

Tell  me something about yourself, your family, kids? other dogs? experience with toy breeds?  what you're looking for in a Crested?

Do you want a Pet? Showdog? Obedience/Agility dog?
Hairless/Puff/ or it doesn't matter?  Interested in a retired older dog (usually under 5)?

If you're just fishing around to find  - 'JUST a Pet'--- but to breed  "MAYBE" later on--  please don't bother writing.  You will not convince me you are serious about this breed if you are not willing to SHOW it before breeding it!!!  Find someone who really doesn't care about the breed if that is your goal.  IF you sincerely ONLY want a pet- the No Breeding restriction is No Problem anyway.  A neutered pet makes a better and healthier companion.

I breed these lovely creatures for my own pleasure, to show the best I have and to place the remaining stock into proper homes, with people who genuinely care about the dogs as loving companions. This is an Eye-Candy Breed- people want one for 'looks'- or just because its ODD or Exotic....  but you need one to find out what the DOG is truly like... many people spend more time buying a car they'll have 3 years than a dog they'll have upwards of 12+ years that they share their entire family with.... that confounds and confuses me!

IF you're looking for more answers to your questions about the breed. I'll be glad to help-BRIEFLY by e-mail... if you need or want specifics--- please do that  By PHONE. ( Sorry- long distance callbacks are collect)   I just don't have the hours it would take to answer every individual e-mail in the detail you may desire.  I'm GLAD to help, even if I don't even have a puppy to sell you.  But I can't spend hours typing away on the internet nightly.   If the phone  rings  busy- I'm probably online.

If the answering machine is on ( It kicks on sometimes without my notice) Do NOT leave a message-- I don't listen to the messages- they come in garbled on the tape!

Call Marcia - 937-833-4247   ( NO unidentified phone calls are answered- I'm rebelling against computer phone calls!)    OHIO time (EST)  Please PHONE between 9 am and 8 pm ONLY.
